What Is Eisenmenger Syndrome?
Eisenmenger syndrome is a long-term heart and lung condition. It happens when a hole in the heart changes blood flow over time. This leads to high pressure in the lungs, called pulmonary hypertension, and low oxygen in the blood.
At first, blood moves from the left to the right side of the heart. Over time, the pressure gets too high and blood flow reverses. This causes a right-to-left shunt.
This condition often starts from a heart defect you’re born with, like a ventricular septal defect (VSD) or atrial defect.
What Causes It?
The most common cause is an uncorrected heart defect, such as:
- VSD (hole between lower chambers)
- Atrial septal defect (ASD)
- Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
These are all congenital heart defect issues. When they go untreated, they can cause high pressure in the lungs and damage the heart.
This is known as the Eisenmenger syndrome pathophysiology.
Symptoms to Watch For
Symptoms often appear slowly and get worse with time.
Look for signs like:
Imaging may show an enlarged right ventricle heart or cardiomegaly on X-ray. Right ventricular systolic pressure may also be high.

How It’s Found
Doctors use a mix of tests to check for Eisenmenger syndrome:
Your medical team will check if there is damage to the heart or lungs and confirm if the shunt has reversed.
This is where BaleDoneen can help.
Our team works with patients facing heart and artery problems. We use early testing, clear plans, and prevention tools to manage long-term risk and support your care. If you live with a heart defect or congenital heart failure, BaleDoneen method can help guide your next steps.
Treatment Options
There is no full cure for Eisenmenger syndrome, but care can ease symptoms and prevent problems.
Eisenmenger syndrome treatment may include:
- Medicine to lower lung pressure
- Oxygen therapy
- Avoiding extreme activity
- Medicine to prevent blood clots
- Iron therapy if you are anemic
- Treating any infections quickly
- Support for heart failure symptoms
In some cases, a lung or heart-lung transplant may be discussed.
What medication is used for Eisenmenger syndrome?
Doctors may use drugs to relax blood vessels, manage blood flow, and improve oxygen levels.
Eisenmenger Syndrome Triad
Doctors often refer to three key signs:
- High lung pressure (pulmonary hypertension)
- Reversal of shunt (right-to-left blood flow)
- Low oxygen levels (cyanosis)
This group of symptoms is called the Eisenmenger syndrome triad.
